Marketplaces leader eBay has released its first Climate Transition Plan, outlining a roadmap for advancing sustainable commerce and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its operations and value chain. The plan highlights long-term climate commitments, including a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, alongside continued emphasis on circular commerce models such as recommerce.
While this is not a direct seller policy update at present, the plan signals the direction of travel for future marketplace programs and expectations related to logistics, packaging, carrier emissions, and sustainability initiatives.
As eBay’s climate strategy develops, new seller-facing requirements, reporting expectations, or sustainability-aligned program criteria may emerge. This could increase operational overhead related to packaging materials, carrier selection, and emissions tracking.
Sellers already aligned with recommerce models, reusable or lower-impact packaging, and lower-emission shipping options may benefit if eBay introduces sustainability badges, incentives, or preferential merchandising tied to emission-reduction efforts.
