TikTok believes that building trust starts with transparency. Earlier this year in April, they released their first-ever TikTok Shop Safety & IPR Report, offering insights into their policies and highlighting their commitment to ensuring a safe shopping environment through investment in advanced tools, technology, and skilled personnel.

On 22nd October, TikTok has released its second TikTok Shop Safety Report. This report provides updates on their continuous efforts to maintain safety on TikTok Shop and includes detailed data points that reflect the positive impact of these initiatives. It also outlines TikTok’s comprehensive approach to safeguarding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), ensuring a secure platform for buyers, sellers, and creators alike.

Key Insights from the TikTok Shop Safety Report

TikTok has prioritized creating a secure marketplace, focusing on safety and security to foster positive shopping experiences for millions of sellers and customers.

Tools & Technology:

TikTok Shop has allocated over $500 million toward developing tools, technology, and hiring staff to create a safe environment, ensuring users can shop with confidence from product discovery through to purchase.

Listings & Accounts:

TikTok Shop enforces a range of policies for buyers, sellers, creators, and their products, reflecting the company’s commitment to maintaining a trusted online marketplace. Between January and June 2024, TikTok:

  • Rejected 20.4 million product listings.
  • Removed 124,000 restricted or prohibited items post-listing.
  • Deactivated over 2 million seller accounts and removed their products.
  • Removed eCommerce features from more than 500,000 creators.

Intellectual Property Rights:

TikTok Shop employs a comprehensive, end-to-end approach to IPR protection as per its report. It addresses potential issues throughout the entire lifecycle of products and sellers. From July 2023 to June 2024, TikTok:

  • Blocked more than 5 million potentially infringing products from going live.
  • Proactively removed 497,026 products for IPR violations.
  • Removed 800,000 livestreams and videos due to IPR infringements.
