TikTok Shop has formally outlined comprehensive requirements for expiration date labeling and shelf life management, reinforcing its commitment to consumer safety, product transparency, and regulatory compliance across its marketplace. The updated TikTok Shop expiration date policy applies to a wide range of product categories, particularly those intended for human or animal consumption, personal care products with drug labeling, and regulated medical devices.

The policy clarifies what products require expiration dates, how dates must be displayed, minimum remaining shelf life thresholds before shipment, and the consequences of non-compliance.

Products Subject to Expiration Date Labeling

Under the TikTok Shop expiration date policy, any product with a defined shelf life or that loses effectiveness over time is considered expiration-dated, even if an expiration date is not traditionally printed on the packaging. Importantly, lot numbers cannot be used as substitutes for expiration dates.

Products with expiration date labeling requirements on TikTok Shop include:

  • Shelf-stable food and beverages
  • Fresh and frozen packaged food products
  • Dietary supplements (for human or animal consumption)
  • Pet supplies
  • All food, beverage, and supplement products for consumption
  • Personal care products with drug labeling, such as:
    • Sunscreen
    • Deodorants and antiperspirants
    • Hair loss treatments
    • Acne treatments
    • Nasal solutions
    • Teeth whitening products
  • Medical devices, including:
    • Medical and PPE masks
    • Blood glucose monitors
    • Glucose control solutions

For medical devices and regulated items, sellers are required to submit clear images of the product label showing the expiration date during listing or compliance checks.

Shelf Life Requirements Before Shipping

TikTok Shop mandates that products shipped to customers must retain a reasonable and sufficient remaining shelf life at the time of delivery. This requirement applies to:

  • Individual products
  • Bundled items
  • Bulk or multipack shipments

Food and beverage items, as well as any products shipped alongside them, must be lot-controlled to ensure traceability and safety. Sellers using Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) must also comply with TikTok Shop’s dedicated product packaging and fulfillment standards.

The goal is to ensure customers receive products with adequate time for safe use or consumption, rather than items approaching expiration.

Expiration Date Formatting Standards

TikTok Shop specifies strict formatting and visibility requirements for expiration dates:

  • Accepted formats:
    • Month–Date–Year
    • Month–Year
(Months may appear as numbers, full words, or abbreviations)
  • Medical devices must use the YYYY-MM-DD format

Additional labeling requirements include:

  • Expiration dates must be clearly visible and legible
  • Dates must not overlap or obscure other critical label information, such as ingredients, drug facts, or manufacturer details
  • For case packs, multipacks, or display boxes, expiration dates must appear on:
    • The outer packaging
    • Each individual product inside

Prohibition of Misleading Product Dates

TikTok Shop explicitly prohibits any form of date manipulation or misrepresentation. The list of violations includes:

  • Selling outdated stock with intentionally altered manufacturing or production dates
  • Applying stickers or overlays to conceal original expiration dates
  • Misleading marketing claims related to freshness or shelf life
  • Using lot numbers instead of expiration dates to bypass labeling rules

These actions are treated as serious compliance breaches and can lead to enforcement actions.

Enforcement Actions and Seller Appeals

TikTok Shop regularly audits seller listings and storefronts to ensure compliance. If violations are identified, TikTok Shop may take actions such as:

  • Assigning violation points to seller accounts
  • Removing non-compliant product listings
  • Revoking selling privileges for affected categories
  • Issuing refunds to impacted customers

Sellers retain the right to appeal enforcement decisions through TikTok Shop’s official appeals process.

Recommended Remaining Shelf Life by Product Category

To help sellers comply proactively, TikTok Shop has published recommended minimum shelf life thresholds before shipment:

Recommended remaining shelf life requirements

For example, a dietary supplement containing 240 daily servings should arrive with more than 240 days remaining before expiration to ensure full usability, in accordance with TikTok Shop rules for dietary supplements and food products.

What This Means for TikTok Shop Sellers

The updated expiration date and shelf life policy underscore TikTok Shop’s move toward stricter marketplace governance, particularly for regulated and consumable products. Sellers are expected to implement stronger inventory rotation, lot control, labeling accuracy, and fulfillment checks to remain compliant.

Failure to adapt could result in listing disruptions, enforcement penalties, or loss of selling access—making proactive compliance a critical operational priority.
