It all started with the aim to democratize the e-commerce universally. However, it is better said than done. Naturally, the demand & supply shapes the dynamics of an Industry so is with e-commerce. Invariably, the largest economies – the US, UK, India, France, Canada, Germany have the highest demand.
The bigger the economy, more the purchasing power and more the purchasing power, higher the penetration of e-commerce. Therefore, in the first few years, the focused was solely to cater to the demands of predominantly US & European markets.

India is the next big thing in the e-commerce space and everyone needs a piece of it. Amazon has their own website, Walmart acquired Flipkart, Alibaba holds the majority stake in the Paytm.
Similarly, Snapdeal, Shopclues, Jabong. Myntra (a Flipkart company) all have large investment houses as their venture capital or a high profile angel investor has infused cash in them. This is all in the anticipation of the big things to come to Indian e-commerce space.
