OpenAI is bringing ecommerce transactions directly into ChatGPT with the debut of Instant Checkout, a new shopping experience that allows users to discover and buy products inside conversations. Etsy is the first marketplace to go live, with Shopify merchants—including major brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori—set to follow.

The feature is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed and open-sourced with Stripe. ACP allows ChatGPT to transmit essential order details to a merchant’s backend, where orders can be confirmed, processed, and fulfilled using existing payment systems and support services.

How it Works

As of September 29, U.S.-based ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can browse Etsy listings surfaced in conversations and complete single-item purchases directly within the app. Multi-item cart functionality and wider regional availability are expected in future updates.

“For a marketplace of over 5 million creative entrepreneurs, it’s our job to remove barriers for shoppers so they can easily discover and be delighted by our sellers’ special items,” said Rafe Colburn, Etsy’s Chief Product and Technology Officer. “Partnering with OpenAI helps us meet shoppers where they are in their discovery journey.”

Strategic Expansion Beyond Discovery

The launch marks a major step in OpenAI’s vision for agent-led commerce. Earlier this year, Etsy was named among the first platforms to test OpenAI’s Operator agent, alongside Instacart and eBay. While those partnerships weren’t mentioned in the Instant Checkout announcement, Etsy’s live integration highlights OpenAI’s shift from search-and-discovery to transaction-ready shopping.

Stripe at the Core

Stripe plays a central role in powering payments. Merchants already using Stripe can enable checkout within their code, while others can integrate via Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or ACP’s Delegated Payments Spec.

“We’re proud to power Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and co-develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help businesses and AI platforms build the future of commerce,” said Will Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe.

The Road Ahead

With Shopify integration “coming soon” and multi-item support on the roadmap, Instant Checkout positions ChatGPT as not just a conversational AI but a commerce gateway. The move could reshape how users shop online, challenging traditional marketplaces by merging product discovery, recommendation, and purchase into a single AI-driven flow.
