OpenAI on Monday announced Instant Checkout, a feature designed to let shoppers complete purchases directly inside ChatGPT. The tool, developed with Stripe and powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, enables a streamlined “chat-to-checkout” flow that removes the friction of redirecting to external websites.
The feature is currently live for U.S. Etsy sellers, giving them exposure to ChatGPT’s massive user base. More than a million Shopify merchants are expected to follow in the coming months, according to OpenAI.
For users, the experience is straightforward: ask ChatGPT about a product, view details surfaced by the AI, and, if the seller supports Instant Checkout, finalize the purchase in just one click.

Why Chat GPT’s Instant Checkout Matters For Sellers!

OpenAI framed Instant Checkout as more than a payment option. For merchants, it represents:

  • Lower Cart Abandonment: Shortening the path to purchase can reduce drop-offs at the checkout stage.
  • Expanded Reach: ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly active users present a vast new audience for sellers.
  • Ease of Integration: Stripe merchants can connect with as little as a one-line integration, OpenAI said.
  • Merchant Control: Sellers remain the merchant of record, managing fulfillment, returns, and service.
  • Transparent Costs: Fees are applied only on completed transactions.

Preparing for Instant Checkout

Industry analysts note that early adopters often gain visibility advantages when new commerce features roll out. Merchants planning to integrate are advised to:

  • Keep product data updated, pricing, inventory, and descriptions feed directly into ChatGPT’s ranking system.
  • Focus on single-item sales, the initial scope of Instant Checkout. Bundled offers may help drive traction.
  • Train support teams to handle inquiries about ChatGPT-originated purchases.

Looking Ahead

OpenAI has signaled its intention to expand Instant Checkout beyond single items and across additional regions. The company is also open-sourcing the Agentic Commerce Protocol, enabling developers and merchants to experiment with new integrations and use cases.

“With Instant Checkout, we’re closing the gap between product discovery and purchase,” an OpenAI spokesperson said. “It’s about making commerce as seamless as conversation.”
