As eBay celebrates its 30th anniversary, the marketplace is doubling down on artificial intelligence to simplify selling, boost efficiency, and attract more inventory. At its OPEN25 conference in Las Vegas, eBay unveiled new AI messaging, cost tracking, inventory automation, and seller protection features—all designed to help sellers save time, grow sales, and build trust ahead of the holiday rush.

The AI Push: A Seller-Centric Bet

According to eBay VP of Seller Experience Xiaodi Zhang, AI is now a “virtuous flywheel” for the platform: happier sellers mean more unique inventory, which drives more buyers. eBay has already seen 10 million sellers use its AI tools to create 200 million listings since 2023—currently, 500,000 listings per day are crafted with AI.

At OPEN25, eBay added:
  • AI Messaging Assistant – Drafts suggested replies to common buyer questions using listing data. Sellers review before sending, so responses stay accurate and on-brand.
  • Offers in Messaging – Buyers and sellers can now negotiate directly within message threads—making deal-making faster and more intuitive.
  • “Your Cost” Field – Lets sellers input item-level costs inside eBay, enabling smarter pricing, promotion planning, and ad rate adjustments without spreadsheets.
  • Inventory Mapping API – High-volume sellers can auto-generate optimized titles, item specifics, and descriptions by feeding in images and product IDs.
  • Enhanced INR Protections – From October, sellers won’t be penalized if delivery delays trigger premature refunds. If tracking confirms delivery, eBay will reimburse the item cost and remove related negative feedback.
  • Automated Positive Feedback – For on-time tracked deliveries, eBay will auto-leave positive buyer feedback when customers remain silent.

Why It Matters for Sellers

These tools land as marketplaces, from Amazon to Poshmark, race to equip sellers with generative AI. For resource-strapped sellers (many of whom are individuals, not brands), AI levels the playing field: it cuts listing time, polishes presentation, and adds professionalism without extra hires.

Yet, analysts caution against over-reliance: AI-enhanced photos or descriptions must still reflect the real condition of items to avoid buyer dissatisfaction.

What Sellers Should Do Now

  • Enable AI messaging to save time on routine queries.
  • Experiment with the “Your Cost” field for profitability tracking.
  • Adopt the Inventory Mapping API if managing large catalogs.
  • Ship with tracked labels to qualify for INR protection.
  • Test AI listings but review outputs for accuracy and tone.

TL;DR

eBay’s OPEN25 updates show the platform is all-in on AI for sellers—from faster messaging to smarter pricing and stronger protections. For eCommerce sellers exploring multichannel growth, these innovations make eBay more attractive as a sales channel especially pre BFCM.
