Walmart’s Jet Suspension

Jet.com is inoperational now. Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon announced on May 19, 2020, about Jet closing. All the services, including shipping network, fulfillment centers, and human resources, had already merged into Walmart.com last year.

“Due to continued strength of the Walmart.com brand, the company will discontinue Jet.com,” said Walmart in a statement.

Walmart Jet Ownership: The history

Walmart Jet ownership began when Walmart acquired Jet.com in 2016 for $ 3.3bn. Since then, the Walmart Jet association has worked together to give fierce competition to leading marketplaces. Jet.com since then focussed on same-day grocery delivery and the needs of urban shoppers.

The deal was locked to take on some global competitors with the help of a digitally native brand.

“If you look at the trajectory of our business, it changed when we made that acquisition.”, says Doug McMillon on Walmart’s acquisition of Jet.com. McMillon believes that Walmart is now able to reach affluent, young customers because of Jet.com.

In the first fiscal quarter, Walmart’s e-commerce sales in the U.S. shot up by 74%, reported CNBC. The earnings report of Walmart revealed that revenue for the company in this quarter was $ 134.6bn, an increase of $10.7 billion, or 8.6%, actually beating expectations.

“Our business fundamentals are strong, and our financial position is excellent. Customers trust us to deliver on our brand promise, and I’m confident in our ability to perform well in almost any environment. While the short-term environment will be challenging, we’re positioned well for long-term success in an increasingly Omni world.”; said Biggs.

Walmart was earlier preferred among the middle-aged, middle-class people, while Jet.com was more prevalent among the young, affluent masses. Walmart managed to gather customers of all classes over time. So the closure of Jet.com might be an attempt to expand Walmart as a brand and acquire all the resources like staff, shipping service, and fulfillment.
