The Netherlands’ eCommerce sector witnessed a 5% growth in 2024, with Dutch consumers spending approximately €36 billion online. While the total number of online orders declined by 1%, the increase in spending indicates a shift toward larger or higher-value purchases.

A major driver of this growth was the services sector, which experienced a 10% increase in online spending.

Future Outlook: What’s Next for Dutch eCommerce?

The future of Dutch eCommerce looks promising, with rising digital adoption, increasing mobile commerce, and an expanding cross-border market. Consumers are expected to lean further into digital shopping, particularly for high-value goods and international purchases. Emerging technologies like AI-driven personalization, automation, and enhanced logistics solutions will further streamline the online shopping experience.

Additionally, sustainability and faster delivery models will play a pivotal role in shaping consumer preferences, pushing local and global marketplaces to innovate and optimize supply chains.

Bol.com & Amazon.nl: Leading the Charge in Dutch eCommerce

Bol.com continues to be the dominant force in Dutch eCommerce, generating €4.3 billion in revenue in 2023, translating to a 17% market share. Meanwhile, Amazon.nl is rapidly expanding, capturing an 8% share with approximately €1.2 billion in revenue.

In terms of Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), Bol.com leads at $5.6 billion, followed by Amazon.nl with $4.1 billion. These figures underscore the growing competition in the Dutch eCommerce market, with both giants continuously innovating to offer better pricing, faster delivery, and an enhanced customer experience.

Cross-border eCommerce & The Role of Integration

Cross-border eCommerce is flourishing, with 55% of Dutch consumers making international purchases. These sales now contribute €4.4 billion, or 12% of total eCommerce revenue in the country. Chinese platforms, in particular, have gained traction, accounting for 28% of international orders, up from 21% in 2023.
For businesses looking to expand globally, eCommerce integration is key.

With platforms like Bol.com and Amazon.nl offering extensive integration capabilities, businesses can effortlessly scale their operations while ensuring a smooth omnichannel experience for customers.

As the Dutch eCommerce landscape continues to evolve, companies leveraging advanced integration tools and cross-border strategies will be the ones to thrive in the coming years.
